PMS and Menstrual Complaints

From Chinese medicine, the woman is seen as ‘Blood being’, which is of course also related to the menstrual cycle.
This natural hormonally controlled system is indispensable in relation to fertility, but can also cause a lot of discomfort.

Many women suffer monthly complaints related to menstruation.
These complaints vary in severity and can manifest themselves in many ways.

It may include menstrual pain, emotional changes, nausea, general malaise, breast tension, insomnia, migraine, depression, constipation or diarrhea, etc. The cycle can also be irregular, stop suddenly or cause heavy or minimal bleeding.
By looking at and treating this in a Chinese way, you can resolve many discomforts and irregularities, without hormonal interventions.

Menstrual complaints explained according to TCM

The Chinese speak of health when there is sufficient energy (Qi) and ‘Blood’ (energetic form of Blood) and when this can flow freely.
Energy/Qi is mainly Yang (and represents movement, action, upwards and outwards) and Blood represents Yinne energy (represents nutrition, rest, recovery, downwards and inwards).
The Yin and Yang energy must be in balance for good flow and nutrition of the body. The free flow can be hindered by blockages and shortages of Qi and Blood. Blockages and deficiencies can arise from excessive or insufficient effort, emotional circumstances, incorrect nutrition or external factors.

Severe or stabbing pain is often caused by a stagnation or blockage of Qi or ‘Blood’, while nagging pain is often caused by emptiness. ‘Cold’ or ‘Damp’ may also be present in the body, which prevents proper circulation in the body.

The emotional or mental state of man is largely dependent on the Blood; Sufficient (and freely circulating) blood provides a satisfied and calm feeling. Blood is closely related to the energy of the Heart and Liver. The Spleen/Stomach energy ensures the production of Blood. And of course, Blood is closely related to menstruation, which often causes emotional changes around menstruation.

The treatment of menstrual complaints and PMS

To treat menstrual complaints, it is important, among other things, to have good Liver and Kidney energy. Both energy channels run along the uterus and therefore play an important role in gynecology.

The Liver energy moves and distributes the blood and thus also regulates menstruation. The liver can come under pressure due to, among other things, (not expressing) emotions and stress. If the liver energy stagnates, this mainly causes pain.

The Kidney energy is the basis of all Yin and Yang energy in the body. They take care of the condition of the uterus and regulate hormones, temperature and general health.

It is therefore very important that the Liver energy can flow freely and the Kidney energy is powerful enough to nourish all other organs.

The Lung and Spleen energy are important for, among other things, moisture management and nourishing and moving energy. So here we also look at whether these are sufficiently powerful to perform their tasks properly.

Acupuncture can often provide quick relief from various menstrual complaints, such as PMS, pain and irregularity, without side effects and hormones.
